The latest news from Alaska on Madison

At long last, we are pleased to announce that our website has been redesigned.  In keeping with our self-description as a gallery run by collectors for collectors, we are offering a limited number of pieces. Every piece is one that we would be happy to have in our personal collection, and the description of each piece explains why. We have also included more expansive introductory material for each section. We plan to continue to expand and update this material over time.

With a few exceptions, all of the pieces shown on the general Inuit art pages are for sale. In addition, the Exhibitions page has links to our past themed exhibitions at the gallery. These exhibitions offered collections of works on a single topic, or from a single region, and they are included as a reference resource.  Very few of the pieces from the exhibitions are still available for sale.

We have also included some Old Bering Sea works, dating from 1000 to 2000 years ago. Because of New Jersey's laws on ivory sales, these are no longer offered for sale.  Like the pieces from past exhibitions, we have included them for reference purposes.

We welcome your feedback on the redesigned website.

Jessie Oonark (1906-1985)

Pictured on the left is Jessie Oonark's Woman, a 1970 stonecut by Baker Lake's leading graphic artist.

This is an early, seminal print by Oonark.  She would revisit its theme -- a woman in traditional dress -- often, but this image sets the tone for the whole series.  The woman's shape is streamlined and distorted, emphasizing the woman's strength but also depicting the finer details of the amauti. Oonark's use of color was dramatic and sophisticated, juxtaposing bold blocks of intense hues.

The print was issued as part of the 1970 Cape Dorset print collection; Oonark was the only artist from outside Cape Dorset whose work was included in the Cape Dorset collections. It was published in The Inuit Print, and Arts of the Eskimos: Prints.

The print is 31 3/16 x 21 3/4 inches.
About Alaska on Madison

In 2016, we regretfully closed our brick-and-mortar gallery on Madison Avenue. We have now relaunched as a virtual gallery, and hope to hear from many of you.

We continue to be happy to assist you with inquiries, with searches for particular pieces or artists, with organizing your collections and with buying or selling at auction. Our Inuit artist search tool is available on our website, and we would be delighted to help you use it.  If you prefer to puzzle things out for yourself, Deciphering Inuktitut Signatures will help you to identify artists.

We are always pleased to answer questions or just chat. You can contact us by email or by phone at (908) 293-3499.

Our very best wishes to you all.
