Views from the North:
Drawings from Cape Dorset

Through February 28, 2014

For the first time, Alaska on Madison presents an exhibition of original one-of-a-kind drawings from Cape Dorset. Views from the North: Drawings from Cape Dorset is on view through February 28.

Cape Dorset drawings have evolved from being merely the starting point for prints to being fully realized works. Through their drawings, the younger generation of artists is grappling with current issues, like global warming and the relationship between traditional ways and 21st century reality.

The seasonal variations in the landscape are a dominant theme, with ice coming (Nicotye Samayualie's The beauty of the fall weather) and going (Itee Pootoogook's Ice in Spring and Tim Pitseolak's Ice Breakup) and staying (Tim Pitsiulak's majestic "Ukiatsaami Malijua" (Mallik Mountain)). Qavavau Manumie and Nujalia Quvianaqtuliaq offer views of the land at varied times and seasons. Shuvinai Ashoona contributes two fantasy globe-scapes featuring multiple worlds, some familiar and some unfamiliar. Papiara Tukiki presents a herd of caribou in the landscape. Ningeokuluk Teevee is represented by real and spirit birds. And Jutai Toonoo covers all bases, with a portrait, a landscape and a haunting Raven over mountains in shades of blue.

Rare Bella Coola Carpenter Mask

This exquisite nineteenth century Bella Coola mask depicts one of the four carpenters who created the world and all its beings. The four supernatural brothers were created at the beginning of time by the supreme spirit, Ahlkuntam, and given the task of ordering the world. The oldest and most powerful brother was named Yula'timot (He Who Completes Any Task with a Single Smoothing Motion) and is credited with creating fire. The second brother brought rain and was called MaLapa'litsek (He Who Completes Any Task with a Single Stroke of his Adze). The creator of trees, MaL'ape'exoek (He Who Completes Any Task with Two Strokes of his Adze) was the third brother. IL'iLu'lak (He Who Completes Any Task in a Single Day), the fourth brother, created the world.
