Mask of Atklima, dance of the forest spirits. Part of
winter ceremonies; significant because of red star in center
of forehead, which indicates a crystal. Kwakiutl believed
that the mask that displays the crystal confers supernatural
powers on the wearer. 1890-99. Painted wood, cedar bark.
